SAR’s 2016-2017 Lamon Scholar, Gregorio Gonzales on NPR

Jan 4, 2017

NPR’s All Things Considered aired a story about the mixed-race Genizaros, whose history in northern New Mexico goes back to the seventeenth century. The term genizaros has been used as a racial slur referring to the Native Americans who were captured in warfare in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and held in servitude by New Mexican families. Though the years of slavery seemed to absorb the Native Americans into the Hispanic culture of the region, the Genizaros have always known who they are. Now Genizaro scholars are beginning to share their story with the world.
