SAR Mourns the Passing of Former Board Member Steadman Upham

The Board of Directors and staff of the School for Advanced Research are sad to announce the death on July 30 of Steadman Upham, 68, a distinguished former member of the SAR board and former president of the University of Tulsa. Upham died of complications related to routine surgery.

Prior to his career as a university administrator, Stead Upham taught archaeology at New Mexico State University. He was editor of The Evolution of Political Systems: Sociopolitics in Small Scale Sedentary Societies (SAR Press, 1990) as well as many other books and articles on various facets of archaeology.

In its public announcement of Upham’s death, the University of Tulsa details his remarkable professional and civic accomplishments.

SAR extends its deepest condolences to Stead Upham’s wife, Peggy, as well as to his children and grandchildren.
