Since the publication of Treasure Island, pirates and piracy have been romanticized in print and films like Captain Blood and Pirates of the Caribbean as rustic egalitarians preying on the wealth of empires. How do popular notions of piracy mesh with the reality of the archaeological record? Dr. Russell Skowronek examines whether evidence uncovered by archaeologists supports the fictional ideas.
