This presentation, based on research conducted across Mongolia between 2005 and 2008, examines how the transition from Soviet-style socialism to an unregulated free-market economy has affected the productivity and sustainability of agriculture and livestock herding. In the context of accelerating climate change, development strategies that favor urban development, combined with a weakening of the state regulatory presence in the agricultural sector, pose serious risks to livelihood security in rural areas.
