The New Space Age: An Archaeological Perspective on Humanity's Exploration and Use of Space

Space archaeology and heritage expert Dr. Beth O’Leary will present an overview of the history of the early space age (c. 1957 – 1972) and its context in the Cold War, focusing on the lunar landscape. She will discuss the significance of important material culture on Earth, the moon, and in orbit, and examine the increase of national interests in space and the development of commercial spacecraft in the context of the challenges these present for international preservation.
Dr. O’Leary is professor emerita in the Anthropology Department at New Mexico State University.
