LIVE AUCTION

Spend the Afternoon with 2022 Living Treasure Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo)

Virgil Ortiz grew up watching his mother and grandmother make pottery in the Cochiti tradition. Although he maintains a strong connection to this formative method and vision, he works in a futurism style, which borrows well-known sci-fi imagery and subject matter to explore topics like the 1680 Pueblo Revolt.

“It is vital that our traditional methods and materials are not forgotten but carried forward — art is as essential as our Pueblo language and way of life,” says Ortiz. “It creates the connection to the next generation to advance into the future utilizing relevant, engaging storytelling and modern, high-tech devices and platforms — this means formulating ideas that awaken the imagination and provoke fascination, emotion, and empowerment.”

Begin the afternoon, exploring IAIA’s Museum of Contemporary Native Arts to see Virgil’s installation in the new exhibition Art of Indigenous Fashion opening on August 19. Then walk over to the New Mexico History Museum to see the new exhibit, Honoring Tradition and Innovation: 100 Years of Santa Fe’s Indian Market 1922-2022. Virgil will provide an insiders-tour of the exhibits and explain his process behind his art installations. End the afternoon with happy hour drinks and a light bite at Horno Restaurant.

Experience limited to 2 people and will take place on August 23, 2022 beginning at 3:00pm.

Value: Priceless.
