Franklin Peters (Acoma Pueblo) created a pot inspired by a historic water jar housed within the IARC vaults. The original jar (IAF.1183), which is pictured here to the right, was collected by archaeologist Kenneth M. Chapman at Acoma in 1928 and is estimated to have been made between 1880-1900. Franklin’s recreated water jar is 10” tall and made with hand-gathered clay and natural pigments.

2011 Rollin and Mary Ella King Native artist fellow Franklin Peters came to SAR to carefully study the Indian Arts Research Center collections, practice increasing the size of his pottery, and incorporate historical designs into his work. Since his fellowship, Franklin has begun showing his work nationally at prestigious art markets such as SWAIA’s Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair. His highly sought after work, known for his remarkable attention to detail, regularly sells out well before the markets are over!
