What does it mean to be Cuban and how do residents of Cuba perceive the world and their role in it?

Join SAR at Garcia Street Books for a reading from Beyond Cuban Waters: Africa, La Yuma, and the Island’s Global Imagination (Vanderbilt University Press, 2018) with author, Paul Ryer. Following the reading, Dr. Ryer will lead an informal discussion.

Dr. Ryer is a cultural anthropologist and has been the the director of SAR’s Scholar Programs since 2016. He conducted extensive research in Cuba on the culture and history of the region, much of which was done while affiliated with the University of Havana.
