Thursday, January 29, 2015, 6:30–10:00 pm, $32.00/pp++

Presented by Nancy Owen Lewis, School for Advanced Research Scholar in Residence.

In the mid 1920s, Elizabeth White and her sister Martha moved from New York City to Santa Fe, where they built their estate El Delirio (The Madness). Inspired by their education at Bryn Mawr College, the White sisters lobbied for the protection of pueblo land, promoted Indian art, and gave fabulous parties. Their enduring legacy, which includes the city's first animal shelter, is examined in this illustrated presentation.

Nancy Owen Lewis has a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Massachusetts. Her extensive research on the White sisters is included in A Peculiar Alchemy: A Centennial History of SAR, co-authored with Kay Hagan. It was named best book in New Mexico History at the 2008 New Mexico Book Awards.
