Erected in 1911, the Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church has played an important role in the history of the African American population in Las Cruces, NM. It has been a church, a school building, and a community center. Placed on the state and national registers of historic places in 2003, Phillips Chapel is now under renovation and will be open for public use again when the restoration is completed. Mr. Fielder is a professor emeritus in history at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, where he taught African American history.
