Navigating Archives and Special Collections Libraries: A Native American Research Guide
Ann Massman began work on a publication designed to help researchers access archival and library resources relating to Native Americans. During her residency, she made significant progress on her proposed book, Navigating Archives and Special Collections Libraries: A Native American Research Guide. More specifically, she interviewed researchers, archivists, and librarians. Her fellow scholars also provided important feedback. In addition, she completed a chapter outline and conducted a literature search, which revealed a need for her proposed guide. For, as she pointed out, many research guides are filled with jargon and therefore difficult to read, while others are narrowly focused or out-of-date. Although her book is primarily geared towards Native American researchers—a diverse group that includes teachers and college students as well as tribal and cultural center staff—other scholars will find it useful as well. The work she accomplished at SAR provided the groundwork necessary for writing the book, which she began that fall.
