Sitting on the north side of the Isleta Pueblo plaza, the massive, white structure of the San Augustin Church dominates the pueblo’s skyline. In 2010, renovations began at the church to repair rotted wooden structural elements and deteriorating adobe walls. This Spanish mission church was first built in the early 1600s, but was “destroyed” during the 1680 Pueblo Revolt and then later rebuilt. Archaeologist Tom Windes will explore the history of the church and reappraise its construction based upon a study of the structural elements examined during the recent repair work.
