Jessica Metcalfe, the 2008–2009 Harvey W. Branigar, Jr. Native Intern, was recently awarded a postdoctoral fellowship. The Postdoctoral Diversity Fellowship from the University of New Mexico enables recent underrepresented minority PhDs to advance their research agenda and their academic portfolio while contributing to diversity initiatives at the University of New Mexico. Fellows receive an appointment in an academic department and have part-time responsibilities in UNM's Office for Equity and Inclusion.

Ms. Metcalfe recently received her Ph.D. in American Indian Studies at the University of Arizona, where her research focused on Native clothing designers. With interests in both academia and curating, Jessica hopes to eventually be granted a joint professor-curatorial appointment in a university or tribal college museum. She also hopes to increase appreciation and cross-cultural understanding of contemporary Native art and literature.
