Visiting Research Associate George Karandinos Wins Award
Please join us in congratulating SAR visiting research associate George Karandinos who has been awarded a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. He is among thirty students from across the US chosen this year out of a total applicant pool of more than 1,200. Each Soros Fellow receives up to $90,000 for tuition and stipends, which Karandinos will use to support work toward an M.D. and a PhD in medical anthropology. He took a one-year leave from Harvard Medical School to work on a co-authored book at SAR with NEH fellow Laurie Hart and visiting research associate Philippe Bourgois. The project, titled Cornered, draws on ethnographic research in Philadelphia as a lens for exploring the US urban narcotics economy and its effect on public health.
