Research Associate Dr. Rebecca A. Allahyari will speak at the “International Workshop on Volunteering and Civic Engagement in Chinese Cities” at the Hong Kong University (HKU), June 10–11, 2010. Dr. Allahyari has been invited to discuss her book Visions of Charity: Volunteer Workers and Moral Community in which she compared the moral self-betterment of volunteers at a Catholic Worker and a Salvation Army kitchen feeding the poor. In her talk, she will present her idea of this volunteer work as a type of “moral selving” and show how this self-work reflects the different visions of charity at these two Christian charities. The conference at HKU is part of an ongoing collaboration titled “Managing World Cites” sponsored by the Faculty of the Social Sciences at HKU, the School of Social Science and the Public Policy at King's College London, and the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University.
