In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans faced a cultural catastrophe as fierce as the loss of people, property, and infrastructure. Amid the devastation, a new focus was brought to the enduring expressions of music, carnival, and cuisine. Musicians and other performers served as model citizens and emblems of recovery. Dr. Nick Spitzer relates why New Orleans culture is largely viewed as the primary agent of the city’s new sense of hope and relatively strong economy.
