Santo Domingo Pueblo Pottery Demonstration with Robert Tenorio
Preview of Santo Domingo Pottery with Robert Tenorio at IARC
Tuesday, October 11, 2011, 10:00–11:00 am
Join in the fun by participating in a traditional pottery-making demonstration and firing. Santo Domingo potter Robert Tenorio enjoys teaching his knowledge of Puebloan pottery by involving people in the process of creation. He will demonstrate each step as he makes a pot, while allowing participants to try out their own artistic skills by painting a small piece with a yucca-fiber paintbrush. Our group will also be able to experience a traditional firing.
Robert Tenorio is one of today’s foremost Pueblo potters. He uses traditional methods of hand coiling and firing outdoors with cottonwood bark. His beautiful pots have won many awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market, including the Potcarrier Award for the Best Large Traditional Jar or Bowl in 1982, 1983, and 1984, and the Indian Arts Fund Award for Overall Excellence in a Traditional Craft in 1988.
As a preview to the trip, Robert Tenorio will meet with participants on Tuesday, October 11th in the Indian Arts Research Center at SAR to share his knowledge of Pueblo pottery. The IARC collection contains more than 300 pieces of Santo Domingo pottery, including five pieces by Robert Tenorio. On Saturday, we will be visiting Robert’s family home in Santo Domingo Pueblo for the pottery-making demonstration. Robert’s niece will also prepare a traditional Pueblo meal for us, as we spend the day at their home.
