The Historic Los Luceros Hacienda
Friday, June 8, 2012, 8:30–3:00 pm
The historic 140-acre Los Luceros property is one of the most beautifully restored nineteenth-century haciendas in northern New Mexico. The ranch is nestled along the Rio Grande and was home to Mary Cabot Wheelwright, founder of the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. Ms. Wheelwright lived here from 1923 until 1958 while she recorded Navajo myths and songs with Hosteen Klah. The property’s history, however, goes back to prehistoric times, as it was an ancestral San Juan Pueblo site. Later, it was occupied by early Spanish explorers, including the sixteenth-century Oñate Expedition.
Lea Armstrong, assistant director at the Wheelwright Museum, will present an illustrated biography of Mary Cabot Wheelwright, who was an active member of the Indian Arts Fund and a close friend of Amelia Elizabeth White—both intimately tied to the history of SAR. After Ms. Armstrong’s presentation, we will drive to Alcalde for an exclusive tour of the entire Los Luceros property, including the La Placita Visitor Center, Abel Lucero House, Capilla de la Sagrada Familia, Casa Grande, Chabot House, and the River House.
We will enjoy our gourmet picnic lunch among the majestic cottonwoods of the River House. Our knowledgeable guide will be Marie Markenstein, who developed the docent program at the estate for the Los Luceros Foundation.
Activity Level: Easy, involves a guided walking tour of the historic property and buildings.
Cost (per person): $75, includes van transportation from SAR, entrance and guide fees, and a gourmet picnic lunch.
Trip Registration—New Policy: To ensure that field trip registration is equitable, SAR has adopted a lottery system.
