The Mimbres bowl painters of present day Southwestern New Mexico are considered by many to be some of the most accomplished artists of the prehistoric Americas. In the past the question of whether it was the women or the men who did the painting, how many artists were there and other such questions have been considered. Another interesting question is how these artists learned their skills. And one can go further and ask did the way they learn differ from other pottery makers in the Southwest and beyond? Some possible answers to these questions will be presented, using many images from the Mimbres bowl digital archive.
