Uchida Shungiku made her debut as a “manga” (comic book) artist in Japan in the early 1980s with work that addressed issues of gender and sexuality in modern Japan. This presentation examines “Minami’s Lover,” an early comic book, as a narrative of personal trauma, a critique of Japan’s patriarchal family system, and a call to return to pre-modern, non-Western notions of the body.
