Empires of Love: Race, Sexuality, and the European-Asian Encounter
Carmen Nocentelli, Associate Professor, Department of English, University of New Mexico
Colloquium, SAR Boardroom
Wednesday, February 20, 2013, 12:00–1:00 pm, Free
Drawing on a range of literary and archival sources, Nocentelli argues that Europe’s expansion into South and Southeast Asia contributed to the development of Western racial discourse while also shaping European ideals of marriage, erotic reciprocity, and monogamous affection. In so doing, she seeks not only to emphasize the interconnection between the history of race and the history of sexuality, but also to challenge the tendency to view early modern sexual ideologies as if they emerged, fully formed, from within Europe alone.
