For two decades, Colombian activists have established barter systems and alternative currencies as a way to promote a new economy rooted in solidarity and mutual support. For many activists, the key challenge is not to design alternative economic models, but rather to become the type of people who routinely and instinctually desire, expect, and live non-capitalism. How, as they put it, can we "clean out the cucarachas" of our capitalist mindsets in order to "create a new culture of solidarity?" In this presentation, Brian Burke will examine barterers' efforts to cultivate non-capitalist subjectivities and discuss possible lessons for other activists seeking social and cultural change.
